If you need to do some welding on some stainless steel, and need to make some fast metal joints that do not sugar, here are four tips on how you should set up your tig welding machine in order to achieve the desired results.
Get Some Practice Metal
If you want to be able to make quick welds on stainless steel, you are going to need to put in some practice. Obtain some scrap metal that is either stainless steel or is the same thickness as the stainless steel metal that you will be working and practicing on. You are going to want to use this metal to practice your technique before you apply it to the expensive stainless steel metal that you need to use for your project.
Adjust The Amperage
To make quick joint welds with stainless steel metal, you are going to need to increase the amperage of the unit that you are using. Most tig welding machines are set to remote, which is fine for most welding jobs. However, for stainless steel jobs, you are going to want to change the amperage setting to panel. By changing it to panel, you will be able to more directly control the amperage settings. At the panel, take the main amperage setting and increase it so that it is twice as strong as what you typically use to weld with.
This higher setting will allow you to quickly weld stainless steel without the steel sugaring; however, it is important to note that doubling the amperage will produce a very intense heat, that you need to make sure is directed at the right source and lines up before you active. This type of setting is best used when you are in complete control of the settings and situation.
Aim For A Micro Burst
As you adjust the amperage settings, you are going to want to turn it up until you are able to get achieve a very quick micro burst of a welding arc. To get this type of micro burst, you are going to want to very tap the pedal that controls your tig welding machine hard and fast, like you would if you were slamming on the breaks to avoid an accident.
Once you have your machine set-up, practice making quick, micro arc's at high amperages; this will allow you to create very quick metal joints on the stainless steel that you are fabricating. For more info, contact a sheet metal fabrication company.
